WaterRower M1 LoRise Rowing Machine with S4 Monitor

Water Rower No Comments »

Review

Feature

  • Handcrafted rowing machine with “water flywheel” that replicates actual rowing feel
  • Flywheel sits in enclosed water tank to provide smooth, quiet, self-regulated resistance
  • Series 4 performance monitor tracks workout intensity, stroke rate, heart rate, and more
  • Coated tubular steel construction complements other commercial equipment; standard seat
  • Stores upright; measures 84 x 21 x 22 inches (W x H x D) and weighs 200 pounds

Overview

The WaterRower M1 LoRise is handcrafted from Pressed Steel with a powder coat finish. The WaterRower’s patented WaterFlywheel has been specifically designed to emulate the dynamics of a boat moving though water and is unsurpassed in its simulation of the physical and physiological benefits of rowing.

Specifications

Rowing has long been recognized as the perfect aerobic pursuit, with naturally smooth and flowing movements that don’t tax the joints but do boost the heart rate. Now you can take your rowing experience to the next level with the commercial-quality WaterRower M1 LoRise rowing machine. Using the same principles that govern the dynamics of a boat in water, the WaterRower M1 LoRise is outfitted with a “water flywheel” that consists of two paddles in an enclosed tank of water that provide smooth, quiet resistance, just like the paddles in an actual body of water. As a result, the machine has no moving parts that can wear out over time (even the recoil belt and pulleys don’t require lubricating or maintaining). More significantly, the water tank and flywheel create a self-regulating resistance system that eliminates the need for a motor. As with real rowing, when you paddle faster, the increased drag provides more resistance. When you paddle slower, the resistance is less intense. The only limit to how fast you can row is your strength and your ability to overcome drag. And unlike conventional rowing machines, which tend to be jerky and jarring, the WaterRower M1 LoRise is remarkably smooth and fluid.

From a fitness perspective, the WaterRower M1 LoRise works 84 percent of your muscle mass, helping tone and strengthen your muscles while burning far more calories than most other aerobic machines. The exercise is also low impact, as it removes all the body weight from the ankles, knees, and hips, but still moves the limbs and joints through a full range of motion–from completely extended to completely contracted.

The WaterRower M1 LoRise is outfitted with a Series 4 performance monitor that’s designed to balance technical sophistication with user-friendliness. The monitor–which includes six information and programming windows, six QuickSelection buttons, and three navigation buttons–displays your workout intensity, stroke rate, heart rate, zone bar, duration, and distance. Plus, the monitor is compatible with an optional heart rate chest strap and receiver, which helps you optimize your workout and achieve your exercise objectives.

The WaterRower M1 LoRise is made from a durable, coated tubular steel designed to fit the look of commercial fitness equipment. The finish is not only attractive, but also rust-resistant and easy to clean. While other rowing machines require cleaning, oiling, vacuuming, and part checks, the WaterRower’s intelligent design and quality components–smooth nylon strapping instead of chains, a pulley-free bungee cord, and an enclosed tank that prevents dust buildup–will save you valuable time and money.

Other details include dual rails with four corner wheels that increase seat stability and reduce the amount of sweat buildup; a frame that flips upright for handy storage; and a weight capacity of up to 1,000 pounds. The WaterRower M1 LoRise measures 84 by 21 by 22 inches (W x H x D), weighs 200 pounds (with water), and carries a one-year warranty on the frame and components (WaterRower will upgrade the warranty to five years on the frame and three years on the components with the completion of a registration form).

ProRower H2O RX-750 Home Series Rowing Machine

H2O Fitness No Comments »

Review

Rx-750 was delivered way before the estimated delivery time. Very easy to set up and takes less space than would be expected from a rowing machine. The heart rate monitor works perfectly, no wires to attach or switches to turn on or off. This machine may not be the perfect workout for a world class athlete, but for someone looking for a good workout without the jarring stresses of running, this is a great machine. Easily keeps my heart rate in the maximum range (I paddled Hawaiian canoes for more than 35 years). Extremely low noise while opperating, only the heel clicks created by the foot pads, while extending the legs, and the quiet rushing of the water in the resistance tank is heard; the seat rollers are entirely silent and silky smooth. I’ve used many different rowers in the gym and this one is an excelent choice for the home user. The manufacturer bends over backwards to help should there be a problem, as I did have with the computer display.

Feature

  • High-quality rowing machine with innovative Hydro-Power Drive system
  • Polycarbonate water tank and internal paddle system mimics feel of actual rowing
  • Easy-to-read, oversized display panel tracks time, distance, calories, and more
  • Comfortable, ergonomically designed handgrip; easy-to-adjust, pivoting footrests
  • Folds for storage; measures 78 x 20 x 22 inches (W x H x D); lifetime frame warranty

Overview

RX- 750 Home Series: Bringing Commercial Grade Quality to Your Home at an Affordable Price. Using the same dynamics as actual rowing, the user adjusts the intensity of their workout with natural adaptive resistance by either rowing faster or slower, no need for any disruptive mechanical adjustments.

Specifications

Bringing commercial-grade quality to your home or office, the ProRower H20 RX-750 Home series rowing machine is ideal for serious workout enthusiasts. The RX-750 employs an innovative Hydro-Power Drive system that mimics the dynamics of actual rowing, with a polycarbonate water tank and an internal paddle system sitting at your feet. Just like with real rowing, the water acts as the main resistance system. Want a more intense workout? Row faster. Want a slow but steady workout? Row slower. There’s no need for any disruptive mechanical adjustments; instead, the water’s “natural adaptive resistance” offers all the pushback you need. In addition, the workout is incredibly smooth and relaxing, with an on-the-water experience that feels and sounds just like the real thing.

The RX-750 includes an easy-to-read, oversized display panel that tracks such details as exercise time, distance, 500-meter split time, strokes per minute, calories burned, and heart rate (in conjunction with the built-in heart rate receiver). And users will love the easy-to-adjust, pivoting footrests, with a size that’s big enough to fit the entire family. Other details include an ergonomically designed handgrip that ensures a comfortable workout, a maximum weight capacity of 350 pounds, and a folding frame that measures less than 20 by 21 inches when stored upright. The RX-750 measures 78 by 20 by 22 inches (W x H x D) overall, weighs 65 pounds, and carries the following warranties: lifetime on the frame, three years on the tank and seals, and two years on all mechanical and non-wearing components.

WaterRower Natural Rowing Machine in Ash Wood

Water Rower No Comments »

Review

I bought a WaterRower (Ash with S4 monitor) and can’t say enough good things about it. I use a Concept 2 in the gym (it doesn’t sound noisy there but who can hear anything in a gym), but went for the WaterRower for less noise (and a smaller footprint) for my condominium. I use it when I watch TV and hardly know I’m exercising – except that I suddenly notice I’m breathing hard when I stop. It is attractive and well built.

I don’t like the computer on mine, so I personally think this model – without the computer (and 0 less expensive) – is the way to go. The computer is virtually worthless. It’s very hard to read (glare) and the timer doesn’t start and stop automatically, so you have to keep stretching (out of reach) to push the buttons. If you’re compulsive about how long you rowed, use a stopwatch. If you’re using it while watching TV, use the show as your timer. Stop when the show is over or if you get too tired.

A negative about all WaterRower: they’re too low. I started using a rower to protect my bad knees, but this rower puts a huge strain on the knees getting on it or off it. There is an extender overpriced at 0 and possibly too flimsy for heavy users (a lot of sideways stress will be placed on the screws that hold it in place when you row). So if you have knee issues, you might not like this rower. I have learned to tolerate this shortcoming by using a chair to help me in getting down into position or up when I’m done.

Mobility and space are important, too. If you use it in the living room, you will need to be able to move it. It’s easy with the WaterRower (try doing it with a treadmill). Also, the fact that it’s quiet will allow you to use it around other people, at night or in an apartment without fear of spouse or neighbor complaint.

At 0, it is expensive but a lot less than the cost of doctor’s visits and medicine for high blood pressure or surgery for obesity. And having exercise equipment at home makes it more likely you’ll use it.

For the record, if you don’t care about how much noise it makes or space it takes up, the Concept2 is great, too.

WaterRower Club Rowing Machine in Ash Wood with S4 Monitor

Water Rower No Comments »

Review

Through the past several months I have spent a lot of time researching various rowing machines both on the Internet and by visiting various fitness equipment dealerships. I long decided that if there was one piece of fitness equipment I was going to ever buy it was a rowing machine. For years I have been working out on the well-known Concept2 in various local gyms. The Concept2 is a great fitness machine, but I wanted to see if there was something better out there, before throwing 00+ on this machine. So, I came across the WaterRower, and boy am I glad that I did! Since I have some experience using the Concept2 (lately Model D), I can list some personal impressions about the two machines so you will have some comparison data. First of all though, let me point out that I purchased my rowing machice for home use. I am a fairly fit individual, but not an Olympic athlete. My main desire in purchasing a rowing machine was to loose / maintain weight, maintain cardiovascular fitness and relieve stress. In all of these categories, the WaterRower came through with shining colors! So, without further ado, some comparison between the WaterRower and Concept2, and then some pointers about the WaterRower itself.

Why is the WaterRower a better equipment in my opinion?

- A lot smoother rowing action than the Concept2. Not only because the patented Water Flywheel, but also because instead of a chain, the WaterRower utilizes pulleys and a high-strength strap. The strap rolls on industrial grade pulleys, and is practically silent. The Concept2’s chain makes a noise as the metal chain advances over the cogs, and because of this, it also rattles. It takes away from the natural feeling of rowing.
- The Water Flywheel’s sound is incredible. The swooshing water in the tank is incredibly soothing and relaxing. The whirr of the air-resistance on the Concept2 does not compare.
- This one is objective, but in my opinion the WaterRower, especially the wood series looks a lot more aesthetical than the metal construction Concept2.
- The clutch on the WaterRower is incredible. On the Concept2, there always is a very slight jerk at the beginning of a stroke, because the clutch on that machine does not engage immediately as you start applying force to the bar. On the WaterRower, the action is instantaneous. It is imperceptible, and the jerking feeling is non-existent.
- Storage: if you have limited space, the WaterRower beats anything else out there. Standing it up, it stores in as little of space as a kitchen seat. Stores in the corner neatly and looks good. The metal contraption of other rowing machines does not come close to this ease of storage. The Concept2 in particular must be folded first, before it can be reasonably stored. You won’t want to do that setup every day, and you will want to use your equipment every day. With the WaterRower, the setup is 1 second. Simply flip down. That’s it.
- Personally, I like the WaterRower’s handle bar a lot more. It is oblong shaped, so it fits into your hand better. It is also covered in a soft touch material, that’s a lot better than the hard plasticky feel of the Concept2’s handle bar. Nonetheless, the shape of the bar matters more to me, and the WaterRower’s bar is superior to anything else I tried.
- The WaterRower’s seat is very comfortable. It glides on two rails placed about a foot apart, which lends it a lot of stability. There are vertical and horizontal bearings, 4 each, so there are 8 bearings in total. This gives the seat an incredible stability. I cannot attest to the longevity of this design, but common sense tells me that 8 bearings will lost a lot longer than 2 on the Concept2. The seat material is just the right hardness, not too soft, no too hard.
- Assembly is a snap by the way. I do not know what’s involved in assembling the Concept2, but the WaterRower’s setup is really easy. If you ever took anything home from Ikea, and managed to put it together, you will have a lot easier time with your WaterRower rowing machine.
- I love the performance monitor. I bought the heart rate attachment (at it’s a no-brainer) and the heart rate zone programs are fantastic. Great motivator. Mind you, the Concept2 also comes with a heart rate monitor and it is just as good as the WaterRower in that regard, if not better.

What’s good on the Concept2:

- The Concept2 is I believe designed for the professional athlete, the pro rower. It is still considered the top choice for training athletes.
- The Concept2 is exceptionally sturdy. If it lasts in a gym for years, it will never break down in home-use.
- The Concept2’s performance monitor is more feature rich when it comes to professional training. I also miss its heart rate recovery analysis feature, which the WaterRower lacks.
- The Concept2 performance monitor comes with individual memory cards, so multiple users can use the monitor and record their exercise history. WaterRower doesn’t have anything like that.
- The Concept2 performance monitor can be networked, so you can easily setup races in a gym setting between several units.
- The Concept2’s monitor is more legible. No arguing about it. Larger, more readable numbers. Having said that, the WaterRower’s monitor still looks a lot classier to me. And I don’t stare at the monitor throughout the exercise.

Bottom line, I believe that while the Concept2 is a great machine, the WaterRower is a better fit for home use. Both of these machines will challenge you unless you are a very advanced athlete. Make no mistake about it; rowing is an extremely challenging exercise when done right. Learn how to row properly to avoid injury, take more enjoyment out of the exercise and to challenge you more. Rowing done in the right form will raise your heart rate much easier than rowing done incorrectly.

I wanted to say a word or two about the WaterRower’s heart rate monitor and the optional heart rate attachment. Ever before I bought the WaterRower, I already had a cheap Nike hear rate monitor that I bought at Costco for . Pretty much the only thing it can do is show your heart rate. And that’s all I needed. The chest strap of this heart rate monitor is compatible with the WaterRower heart rate receiver. Please do yourself a favor and get the heart rate monitor. I cannot begin to tell you how much of a difference it makes! Your target heart rate is a very narrow zone. For weight loss for instance, you should train between 60% to 70% of your maximum heart rate. This is a narrow, 10 bpm range. Without a monitor, it is impossible to remain in this range consistently. At , plus a heart rate chest-strap (for as low as ) you will achieve much better results and will enjoy your WaterRower a lot more. The WaterRower will emit a slow beep when you’re bellow your target zone, and a fast beep when you’re rowing too hard for your chosen zone. You just enjoy the rowing, and all you have to do is keep the monitor silent. That is why I don’t care that the WaterRower’s monitor is not as legible as the Concept2’s.

That’s all I can think of right now; hope you found something useful in my review. I wholeheartedly recommend this incredible exercise equipment to anyone serious enough about exercising for various goals, let it be weight-loss, cardiovascular fitness or strengthening the lower back. (Oh, yeah, forgot about my sciatica! This machine is great in exercising the lower back and strengthening the muscles so you can avoid a flare-up of lower back pain. But – learn how to row properly first!) This equipment looks great, last a lifetime (hopefully) and is an excellent all-body, no-impact workout machine. It costs a lot. More than the average. But believe me, it is worth every dollar, simply because you will want to keep on getting on it. Lastly, it is made right here in North America, and I for one am happy to support our economy, instead of the Chinese economy for once.

Happy rowing! If I find anything wrong with it, I’ll come back with an update.

Lifecore R99 Rowing Machine

Lifecore Fitness No Comments »

Review

After a lot of research I chose to go with the Lifecore R99 because of the computer controls on it and the small footprint it has when folded up. After using it I am even more impressed! It has 12 built in standard programs, (not counting the heart rate programs or the custom user programs you can set up), but what is so neat is how you can change the time, level and distance of each program before you even start it, which makes it seem like you have literally hundreds of programs. On all of my other fitness equipment once you master a program you move on to the next, only being able to over-ride as needed while running the program.

I guess I should back up here a bit, the assembly was also very easy, no problems, all parts were there and it was packaged nicely so nothing was damaged. It was a breeze.

The heart rate strap that came with it works so much better than my Polar strap that I have. As soon as I put on the new strap it instantly showed up on my Polar watch and also on the computer of the machine. It works great and I love seeing my heartrate on the screen at all times. As far as the screen goes, it is nice and bright and shows a ton of information, giving you instant feedback as you workout. It also will compute your heart rate recovery status and evaluate your fitness level when you finish your workout.

You can fold this up in about 30 seconds, it takes up very little space but yet while using it you have a very solid, smooth machine, something you would expect out of a much more expensive rower.

When researching I looked at rowers in the price range of 0.00 – ,300.00, and none of them had all of the user features I was looking for. I am thrilled that this has turned out to be even better than I was expecting.

Most importantly, it gives you a great, enjoyable workout!

Feature

  • 16 levels of push-button resistance; 12 preset programs and 4 Polar-compatible heart rate programs
  • Blue back lit monitor with readouts for speed, RPM, strokes, race function, calories and program

Stamina 15-0200 InTone Folding Recumbent Bike

Stamina No Comments »

Review

I ordered the Stamina InTone Folding Recumbent Exercise Bike from Dazadi. It arrived fairly quickly, but when it arrived the plastic housing covering the peddle assemply was broken, other than that the bike worked fine. I contacted Dazadi who referred me to the manufacturer. Once I reached the manufacturer they shipped me a replacement cover within a few days. Overall I am happy with the product and the service.

I do agree with some of the other reviews in that, if you are taller than 5 feet 10 inches that you may have a little trouble, as I am 5′ 10″ and had to adjust the seat as high as it will go.

As for the product itself, it appears to be pretty well built. The seat is adjustable so it does have a little movement when using it but not enough to be bother. The seat is padded but it could use a little extra padding, so I often put a folded towel on teh seat if I plan to be on it longer than 20 minutes and it does make it more comfortable. I actually prefer this model over all of the standard full size recumbent bikes that I have tried in the past.

Standard full size recumbent bikes have you seated with your legs out in front of you at or near a 90 degree angle. I have alot of back problems due to multiple injuries and this folding model keeps my legs in a position much like a normal bike but I am able to recline so that I am at or near a 45 degree angle which is far mor comfortable than the normal recumbent bikes. I would recommend this folding model to anyone who has low back problems.

About Recumbent Exercise Bikes
Despite the competition from trendy new fitness inventions, exercise bikes continue to be popular options for home exercise. They offer the same aerobic benefits of riding a bicycle at any time, in any weather, without leaving the comfort and safety of home. Exercise bikes don’t take up much space, require little or no balance or coordination, and can provide an effective workout for all levels of users, from beginners to serious competitors. While the same could be said for a number of other types of home fitness equipment, the exercise bike is one of the few that allows you to watch television or read a magazine while you work out.

The term recumbent literally means “lying down.” Exercising in a recumbent or reclining position allows the user to have full ergonomic back support, without causing strain on the arms, neck and shoulders, all of which can be common effects of using an upright bicycle. For many people, having convenient access to quality exercise equipment is critical to sticking with a long-term exercise program.

WaterRower Natural Rowing Machine in Ash Wood with S4 Monitor

Water Rower No Comments »

Review

I bought a Waterrower (Ash with S4 monitor) and can’t say enough good things about it. I use a Concept 2 in the gym (it doesn’t sound noisy there but who can hear anything in a gym), but went for the Waterrower for less noise (and a smaller footprint) for my condominium. I use it when I watch TV and hardly know I’m exercising – except that I suddenly notice I’m breathing hard when I stop. It is attractive and well built.

Two big negatives, though. The monitor/computer is a total waste of money. You can hardly read the monitor due to glare and it doesn’t start and pause automatically when you start to row or pause your rowing (for example, if you stop to fast forward over a commercial). **Update on my last review: it does start automatically from “PAUSE” but it won’t pause automatically. The only useful function is the stroke counter. I count my strokes and divide by 30 to get the number of minutes actually rowed. Or I just set 1000 strokes as my goal for a workout.

The second negative: it’s too low. I started using a rower to protect my bad knees, but this rower puts a huge strain on the knees getting on it or off it. There is an extender overpriced at 0, but no description of the maximum weight you can be and safely use it (I’m worried about sideways torque on the extender while I row). So if you have knee issues, either get the massively priced (00) metal HI RISE model or find some chair or braces to keep next to the rower seat to help you getting down and up.

One more quibble about the computer: it doesn’t come with a heart beat monitor (transmitter or receiver). A receiver should be built in for these prices. You can buy one, but the reviews suggest it doesn’t work well.

Bottom line: if you plan to use your exercise equipment around other people or in a room other than a dedicated exercise room (try to wheel out your treadmill from the living room when you’re not using it) this is hands down the choice. Especially if your joints can’t take the higher impact exercise equipment. But skip the monitor unless you figure out how to eliminate the glare and plan to use it with lots of light (not with the TV on at night, for example). Of course, get some rowing time in at the gym before you buy, just to be sure you will use it once you get it home.

Feature

  • Handcrafted rowing machine with “water flywheel” that replicates actual rowing feel
  • Flywheel sits in enclosed water tank to provide smooth, quiet, self-regulated resistance
  • Series 4 performance monitor tracks workout intensity, stroke rate, heart rate, and more
  • Solid ash and stained honey oak construction absorbs sound and vibration
  • Stores upright; measures 84 x 21 x 22 inches (W x H x D) and weighs 117 pounds

Overview

The WaterRower Natural is handcrafted from solid Ash wood, finished with a honey oak stain and danish oil.

Now you can take your rowing experience to the next level with the WaterRower Natural rowing machine. Using the same principles that govern the dynamics of a boat in water, the WaterRower Natural is outfitted with a “water flywheel” that consists of two paddles in an enclosed tank of water that provide smooth, quiet resistance, just like the paddles in an actual body of water. And unlike conventional rowing machines, which tend to be jerky and jarring, the WaterRower Natural is remarkably smooth and fluid.

From a fitness perspective, the WaterRower Natural works 84 percent of your muscle mass, helping tone and strengthen your muscles while burning far more calories than most other aerobic machines. The exercise is also low impact, as it removes all the body weight from the ankles, knees, and hips, but still moves the limbs and joints through a full range of motion–from completely extended to completely contracted.

The WaterRower Natural is outfitted with a Series 4 performance monitor that’s designed to balance technical sophistication with user-friendliness.

The WaterRower Natural is handcrafted in solid ash and stained honey oak for consistency of color. The wood was chosen due to its marvelous engineering properties, especially its ability to absorb sound and vibration, which enhances the WaterRower’s quiet performance and smooth operation. Ash, like all woods used in the construction of the WaterRower, is a premium hardwood with incredible longevity and dimensional stability. In addition, the wood is harvested from replenishable forests and is hand finished with Danish oil to provide a deep luster.

Other details include dual rails with four corner wheels that increase seat stability and reduce the amount of sweat buildup; a frame that flips upright for handy storage; and a weight capacity of up to 1,000 pounds. The WaterRower Natural measures 84 by 21 by 22 inches (W x H x D), weighs 117 pounds (with water), and carries a one-year warranty on the frame and components (WaterRower will upgrade the warranty to five years on the frame and three years on the components with the completion of a registration form).
